Hi Win Kelly Family,
As most of you know, Rick Applegate’s long-term girlfriend Lisa, was struck from behind at a high rate of speed while at the rear bumper of our Chevy Sonic in a parking lot. Pinning her between the two vehicles.
She was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore City with life threatening injuries to her legs. Her right leg was so badly crushed that the Surgeons at Maryland Shock Trauma had to amputate her leg that night. Over the next week and a half, they tried to save her left leg. After seven surgeries they recommended to remove her left leg.
After a week of care, she was transported to University of Maryland Medical Systems (Kernan). There she began Rehabilitation to learn Wheelchair activities and Mobility skills for ramp use, household tasks, and getting into a car. After three weeks she was released to come home.
With help and support from their families, their Win Kelly Family, friends, and neighbors they have made it this far. She is hoping for more rehabilitation sessions and Prosthetic legs in the future.
In September we are going to have an event to raise money to help them. This is a fun night out, and kids are welcome to come. We are holding a quarter auction. For those of you who were here last year, you know how it works, but for anyone who wasn’t apart of last years quarter auction, read below. Ideas of what we need help with to make this work is below.
Save the Date: Friday September 21, 2018
Time: 6:30 – 9:15 pm
Where : VFW 160
2597 Dorsey Rd
Glen Burnie, MD 21061
(Near BWI—near airplane park off rt. 100)
Start saving your quarters, we are holding a quarter auction to help Rick and Lisa out...
How a quarter auction works…
*Held at the VFW in a large hall setting. At the door you pay $5.00 for 2 paddles. But make sure you say you are there for Lisa (this 5.00 goes to Lisa & Rick). Then pick 2 paddles from 300 numbered paddles. There will be a corresponding ping ball that matches the number on the paddle. Put that ping ball in the container at end of table (important, this is how they call your number when the auction begins.) Then find a seat. There will be food, baked goods (all proceeds from baked goods will go to Lisa & Rick), and there is a bar attached to the hall-you can bring drinks into hall from the bar-no outside alcohol.
*You will see tables along the walls where direct sales vendors will have tables- each round starts with the vendors and ends with the charities. The vendors are there so that the charities do not have to pay the hall fee. Any money that the charity raises while there goes to them-no cost for holding this event. The tables for charity will be along opposite wall. You can walk around and look at what each table has. When the auction starts, they will start at the first vendor table and go around the room ending with the charity tables. The caller will say this is a 2 quarter bid or 1 quarter bid- each paddle purchased at the door counts as 1 bid (1 quarter per paddle if 1 quarter bid and 2 quarters per paddle if 2 quarter bid). The caller will be in the front of the room on a stage- she will pull ping balls out of a container and start calling numbers. If she calls your number and you bid, you win any item/basket off the table for the current table. The bidding for the charity table is usually 3 or 4 quarters per paddle- but the baskets are worth anywhere from $50 to $200 in value - and this money goes to Lisa & Rick. It sounds confusing but once you are there and go through a round it makes more sense. You can also purchase more than just 2 paddles- this will also go to Lisa & Rick.
and kids are welcome.
